The area was originally part of a much larger Macungie Township, which derived its name from the Lenape word *Machk-und-gi*, meaning "bear swamp" or "feeding place of bears," reflecting the region’s early wilderness and abundant wildlife. In 1832, Macungie Township was divided into Upper and Lower Macungie to better serve the growing population.
